We're the Only Ones...

After returning to Singapore from Daraja Academy, I have been asked on numerous occasions, "What was the highlight of your trip?"

And you know what? I can't answer that question.

How can I just pick one moment when it has all been so special?

It started at the airport : meeting three shy girls and two shy boys. Little did I know that after ten days these five students, four other teachers, one mum, and I would all have this shared wonderful experience.

We're the only ones, so far, who know what it felt like to drive into Daraja and then be welcomed by the warmest hugs in the world. Each Daraja girl welcomed each one of us with a hug.

We're the only ones who, so far, understand how hard the girls work because they value their education. The Daraja girls know education will change not only their lives but also the lives of their family members.

We're the only ones who, so far,  know that watching Girl Rising with the Daraja Girls was heart wrenching. We all laughed, sighed, and gasped together. We knew that many of the girls understood this film more closely than others.

We're the only ones who, so far, have met strong Kenyan women who are proud of their culture and but changing aspect they do not like. They are changing aspects of their culture that does not give them a voice.

We're the only ones, so far, that know some of the Kenyan women and girls who are making a difference with the help and support of wonderful men who also believe in women's rights.

We're the only ones, so far, who know that you can make a difference too!
